Alan Cotton was born in Redditch Worcestershire. He trained at the Bournville School of Art, Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham University and at the University of Exeter.
He moved to Devon in the late 1960's, a county which has greatly inspired his work. In turn, he also greatly contributed to the artistic life of the South West as a founder member and president of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, and through his connections to many other arts committees and charities.
In 2005, he was appointed tour artist to HRH, The Prince of Wales during official visits to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Sri Lanka.
His work can be found in numerous prestigious private and public collections both in the U.K. and internationally.
