George Rushton was born in Birmingham and studied there at the City Art School. From 1906-1929 he was the head of the Ipswich School of Art which is considered to be its hey-day producing many fine artists, most notably, Leonard Russell Squirrell (1893-1979). After retirement, he moved to Didcot, Berkshire but the pull of East Anglia brought him back to Suffolk and he spent his final years in Belstead, near Ipswich.
He was a member of the Ipswich Art Club, the R.I, R.B.A. and R.B.S.A.
