Roy connelly works exclusively in oils, painting from life through direct observation of his subject. He paints outside throughout the year and in all weathers – the delicate quality of light in the winter months is a favourite subject.
His paintings are usually completed in a single session, which helps him capture both the time the picture was created and the place.
He is just as comfortable setting up his easel on a quiet beach as he is painting outside the National Gallery overlooking Trafalgar Square.
He has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and has become a regular exhibitor at the Mall Galleries in London with the New English Art Club (NEAC) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), among others. In 2008, he was very proud to be an invited artist at the Discerning Eye exhibition in London, and in 2009, he won the Chelsea Art Society Award for a Painting and became an invited member of the society. He is also a proud member of the British Plein Air Painters group, which exists to exhibit and promote painting on location through direct observation.
He lives in rural Suffolk, close to the former homes of renowned English painters John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. His paintings can be found in corporate and private collections in the United Kingdom, USA, France, Belgium, and Germany.
